Júlia Couto's practice explores narratives around womanhood, power structures and the erotic. Her work merges a sculptural concern with materiality and a historical interest in clothing, and spans from installation to photography and performance. The artist uses the Brazilian Baroque as a conceptual framework for thinking and making: the translation of European excess into the Brazilian context, and the power dynamics and visual gaps that arise from this displacement.
